Analysis
Jazayeri began the heads up match with 7M to Sands’ 9.4M, but after 20 hands the amateur opened up a 5.3 : 1 chip lead over Sands, who currently sits in 7th in the 2012 POY race. Sands woke up with a strong hand and moved his remaining 17 big blinds in after Jazayeri opened from the button, but Jazayeri relied on his Ace to make the call. Sands was looking great after the flop delivered him top pair, while the turn took away Jazayeri’s three outs to the Ace but gave him four outs to the Queen for a gutterball. Trip fives would work too, which is what he caught on the river to secure his first major and $1,370,240. The WPT “Boot Camp” Alum bested a tough final table that included Jason Somerville, Noah Schwartz, and Dan Kelly. Sands’ runner up finish was good for $806,370, his largest cash to date which brought his lifetime earnings at $4.8M.
